T

he festive season is upon us and with it comes the promise of good things to come. Time with family, holidays away and the giving of gifts are just a few of things we encourage you to celebrate with our festive issue. In the spirit of the season, our Report highlights some celebrity philanthropists who we can now admire for more than their on-screen talents or wonderful way with words. Plus, we highlight a few ways you can make someone else’s Christmas a little easier through our local charities. If Christmas is at your place this year, we have advice on decking the halls with contemporary flair. It might be as simple as changing from red and green to pink and lime, but the end result can be spectacular. Summer days in the city bring a great array of entertainment to the fore, and we provide you with a sneak peek of two of our favourites on the bill: polo and the World Buskers Festival. Meet the Style polo team, who will be playing around the South Island this season, and showstopping cabaret soulstress Ali McGregor. As we near the last day of 2017, Gaynor Stanley has conjured a wonderful itinerary for those who wish to make this New Year’s Eve the longest yet. Whether it’s chartering a private jet from Australia to Honolulu to really eke out the celebrations, or joining the four-day celebrations in Cape Town, there are some wonderful ways to welcome in a new year. Happy Christmas Style readers – we can’t wait to see you all in 2018! Kate Preece EDITOR

INSIDE WORD INDULGE. On and Off is a new beauty service set to open its doors on December 7. Located at 181 High Street, expect to find a new destination for lashes and brows (from shaping to microblading), as well as a range of hair removal options – from wax to laser. We recommend the lash lift! If you are a true red wine snob, you will be interested in this new gadget. The Breville Sommelier uses of an app to determine how best to decant your wine, based on key details such as its country and region or origin, varietal and vintage. Forget the days of leaving a bottle to naturally infuse with oxygen, when you can have a whole bottle ready to go in as quick as one minute. It might seem to break all the rules, but when the name Allan Scott is behind an innovation in wine, it’s hard not to at least give “craft wine in a can” a try. The Green Hopped Gooseberry Bomb Craft Wine is certainly one to tickle the taste buds. It’s zingy and fruity, and one that will lure cider and IPA beer drinkers across to the wine side.

GIVE. We’re not hoping for rain, but you would be if you received one of these beautiful umbrellas this Christmas. Kiwi business Blunt Umbrellas has joined forces with New Zealand artist Flox to produce a limited-edition range. Even better, with every ‘Flox’ umbrella purchased, Blunt will donated $30 to Oxfam New Zealand, to support transformational, sustainable crop growing programmes in Pacific nations. If you’re looking for something special for the tree this year, young designer Jemma Smith has designed a bauble that you’ll find at Farmers. The feel-good factor with this one is the full $10 of the purchase price goes to Hospice New Zealand. If you’re looking for a gift that supports locals – and the environment, look for Eco Socks (at Shopology, Arts Centre). Originally designed by St Andrew’s College students Liam Rassie, James Young, Jaymin Stirling and Mackenzie Cox for a Young Enterprise project, the socks are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, and manufactured by Norsewear.

Now at 136 Moorhouse Avenue, its contemporary and casual options for dining, living, working and outdoors are from Europeandesigned, ethical and sustainable furniture imported from Asia. In fashion news, Plume has left Merivale to join the offerings in the central city. Its new location is on the corner of Cotters Lane and Tuam Street. Nearby, at The Crossing, you’ll find Workshop now open and, for makeup junkies, NYX Professional Makeup. A newcomer to Christchurch, NYX is a great place to find stocking stuffers. EXPERIENCE. With the Crowne Plaza looking forward its first Christmas on Colombo Street, the team decided it only fitting to bring back a special guest of its past. Pianist Peter Lewis tickled the ivories in the original Crowne Plaza Hotel lobby for 23 years – until the February 2011 earthquake struck. Another long-standing Christchurch brand, The George, has been recognised as among the top 10 hotels of Australia and New Zealand. Condé Nast Traveler published a readers’ choice awards list recently that saw The George as the only Kiwi brand to make the list, at No. 7. From December 2, Cathay Pacific will be taking passengers directly from Christchurch to Hong Kong. The seasonal service will operate three times a week between now and the end of February only. QA ALI MCGREGOR &

QUEEN OF THE CABARET

As part of the World Buskers Festival, Ali McGregor will astound audiences in the Great Hall (January 18-22).

How do you describe cabaret to the uninitiated? Cabaret is that sweet spot where music, comedy and theatre cross paths. It’s intimate and often personal and I think usually best enjoyed with a drink! You have performed in festivals around the world, from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. What led to your involvement with the World Buskers Festival? My good friend Amy Saunders (Miss Behave) asked me to be a part of the Burlesque Night last year and I was immediately smitten with the Buskers Festival and the Christchurch audience. Some of my favourite people are performing there this year too, so I’m also excited to be there as a punter!

Decadence was born out of my love for both the jazz style of the 1940s and ’50s and the trashiest songs of the ’80s and ’90s. I delve through my greatest and most decadent guilty pleasures from Salt-n-Pepa and The Prodigy, to INXS and Radiohead, and reimagine them as the cabaret mash-ups they have always wanted to be. As the Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, do you find it hard to switch from organiser to performer? Funnily enough I don’t – the last decade of performing in fringe festivals around the world means I am just as at home on stage as I am on an excel spreadsheet and handing out flyers. The beauty of this festival is it is filled with these incredibly innovative performers who, instead of following a more common path directed at stardom, have forged their own independent path towards a life filled with crazy, interesting people and experiences. There isn’t a ‘diva’ in sight… (although there’s no lack of false eyelashes and sequins, don’t get me wrong). What Christmas tradition could you never break? I recently stopped eating meat and dairy and this will be my first vegan-ish Christmas so I am hoping to start some new traditions, but I LOVE me a carols by candlelight (the more local and amateur the choir the better) and have to find a vegan-type Christmas cake recipe because that smell IS Christmas for me. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve? I hate New Year’s Eve. I will be in LA, which sounds glamorous but I daresay I will be drinking gin and eating my body weight in chips while watching Rick and Morty, if I have my way. What are you most looking forward to in 2018? SO. MANY. THINGS. Buskers Festival, debuting my new show about Peruvian soprano Yma Sumac, my last Adelaide Cabaret Festival as Artistic Director, my newly commissioned opera Lorelei for Victorian Opera, and a few other fab things yet to be announced. 2018 is going to be my MINE, ALL MINE!

What can people expect from your show, Decadence?

THE SPORT

OF KINGS

Ahead of the South Island Open, we caught up with the Style polo team to get to know more about one of the world’s fastest sports. Words Kate Preece Photography Mark McNeill

C

hampagne glasses clink in the sunshine as eight horses thunder past at speeds of up to 45km/h. A small white ball leads the pack, awaiting the next thwack from a rider’s mallet. The 2500-year-old sport, a favourite of royalty, is at home in Argentina, England and here in Canterbury. The polo season is in full swing, with the Style team in the midst of the South Island Open. Games are played as locally as Wigram and Rangiora, and as far afield as Winchester, and each and every one of them demands, of the players, much more than clean white pants. Charlie Wood, the eldest of three polo-playing brothers from Sefton, will tell you it’s no Pimm’s picnic when you’re on the field. “Horses take a lot of prepwork. There’s the gear, the team, trucks and the grounds that all need to be in condition ahead of a game. Everyone – mostly – in the league will be playing polo full-time, putting in 14-hour days to get everything ready.” It’s just one of the misconceptions polo players come up against. Once people realise this polo isn’t the one played in water, they still think the ball is hit in the same way as croquet – on the smallest face of the mallet’s head. Yet the entire mallet head is used. Players can propel the ball as far as 135m – half a length of the field – which is no mean feat.

While the youngest in the Style team, Lachie Appleby, 16, is studying for exams at Christchurch Boys’ High School, the other three have been playing polo around the world. Both Charlie Wood and Henry Jones have played seasons in England, where you can earn a tidy sum each game, and Henry Wood (the youngest son of local polo legend Roddy Wood) has spent time in Argentina, where polo is the national sport. “It’s [Argentina] the best place in the world to play polo,” Charlie says, no stranger to playing in Nigeria and Iran too. “They are natural horsemen; there’s something about the passion and flair they have for the game. And they make good horses.” Back in Christchurch, the team is set to face five teams over a three-week period, playing one match a day. Each match is divided into seven-and-a-half-minute segments, called chukkas, and with every goal the teams change ends. As the grades go up, so too the does the number of chukkas per game. With breaks between the chukkas, spectators can expect to be sipping on those bubbles for around an hour, so sip slowly, and give thought to the sport of kings and the efforts that have gone on behind the scenes.

CARLSON

From left: Charlie Wood (29), Henry Jones (26), Henry Wood (22), Lachie Appleby (16).

7 POLO FACTS 1. You cannot play left-handed. Riders hold the reins in the left hand, and the mallet in the right, end of story. 2. The South Island season is longer than the North Island’s, but the country’s penultimate tournament, the New Zealand Open, is played in Auckland in February. 3. In the last World Polo Championship, NZ was in the top eight, but the first three places went to Argentina, Chile and England. 4. Each player will swap ponies at least once for every chukka. Ponies can be swapped mid-chukka, or as often as every three to four minutes. (Charlie has taken 12 ponies to one game.) 5. All four members of the Style polo team know of someone who has died due to a polo injury. 6. All teams can be mixed as they are rating/handicap based. However, women can play in a women’s only competition if they choose. 7. Unlike jockeys, polo players can be tall. However, it is better for the horse if your weight does not tip the scales too drastically.

o man can become rich without himself enriching others. The man who dies rich dies disgraced.” - American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie MARK ZUCKERBERG On December 2, 2015, the social media sensation and his wife Dr. Priscilla Chan pledged, via letter to their newborn daughter, that 99 per cent of their Facebook shares would go to charity during their lifetimes. “Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today,” said Zuckerberg in the letter. At the time of Max’s birth, her parent’s promise was valued at more than $45 billion. Funds will be distributed via the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. GEORGE CLOONEY As ‘Danny Ocean’, a role Frank Sinatra first played in the original 1960s film, Clooney was introduced to a cast of kindred spirits. With Oceans 11 co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, producer Jerry Weintraub, and American human rights lawyer David Pressman, Clooney co-founded Not On Our Watch, a charity

committed to shining the spotlight on international crises affecting human rights, starting with genocide in Darfur.Clooney had already spent 10 days in Chad and Sudan, filming a TV documentary on Darfur refugees, and in 2008 was appointed a United Nations messenger of peace. Not On Our Watch has donated more than USD$7.5 million to Darfur, according to Inside Philanthropy, while Clooney himself gave USD$1 million to the United Way Hurricane Katrina Response Fund. NORA ROBERTS When you have a net worth of around $340 million, supporting others who share your passion is a nice thing to do. In 2001, best-selling author Nora Roberts (aka J.D. Further to this, however, grants are awarded to various children’s causes. In 2012, she was reported to have donated USD$3 million to her foundation, which in 2016 distributed $2.2 million in grants.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without lights. Let there be light - loft in Soho

SKEW YOUR HUES If holly red and mistletoe green are just a bit too northern hemisphere for you, how about sliding the colour wheel? Simply softening the red to pink and the green to mint or apple creates a fresh new look for a Christchurch Christmas. Some other great slants on the colour code: • Pair red with turquoise on your tree ornaments or table setting; • Champion black and white in your decorations, wrapping and centrepieces; • Lift black and white with vivid greenery; • Muted greens also pair well with silver and white; • Stripes are nice – continue your colour theme in striped straws, striped wrapping paper and, of course, candy canes. LET THERE BE LIGHT It wouldn’t be Christmas without lights. Stick to white for a sophisticated look, adding some bronze or silver stars to light up your night. Other illuminating ideas: • String warm white seed lights with glowing stars and metallic lace lanterns along a hallway; • Suspend a cluster of glass lanterns holding flickering tealights in front of a feature wall; • Place Karen Walker filigree tumblers from Ballantynes filled with LED tealights on your entry console along with some elegant candlesticks; • Hang vintage festoon lights and even some coloured bunting above the deck; • Got a firepit? Stack it with logs and strew it with battery-operated seed lights.

MINIMALIST FLAIR Bring some Nordic cool to your home by combining tones of birch, white and silver and keeping the decorations pared back, but cute. • Decorate a silvery branch tree with neutral toned or clear glass ornaments (the Botanic Gardens Shop has some gorgeous ones); • Invest in this understated yet gorgeous Manhatten Christmas Tree from Interiors by Lume; • Soaring branches of red berries in a clear glass vase make a stunning alternative to a tree too; • Arrange varying height votives, tealights and candles of a similar colour with some pine cones and a quirky ornament (reindeer?) on a metal tray; • Hang black, silver and gold paper stars and pom poms in front of a white wall beside a vivid green plant; • Cluster some adorable white deer snowglobes from Redcurrent alongside a tabletop tree or beneath a silvery wreath.

Manhatten Christmas Tree from Interiors by Lume.

GLOSS ACT Got to have some Christmas bling? Here are some ideas for diamonds and gold and all that glitters. • Add some bold gold accents to our black and white theme – think luminous golden orbs on the tree or gold cutlery and crockery with a black table runner; • Make your tree or table an all-white affair with snowflakes, white candles and sparkling crystal; or mix in some black glassware and candles in shiny black candlesticks; • Line a mantelpiece with silver and gold ornaments and candlesticks and white flowers in pewter champagne buckets.

Stuff a glass trifle bowl or glass box with candy canes – the clever ones among you could even arrange your flowers in this.

OUTDOOR Extending your living space to include outdoor settings is not only a smart idea, but it might just save your sanity. To create an inviting setting, try these tips. • Aqua hues teamed with burlap tones and textures are wonderful for coastal Christmases; • Suspend a decorative chandelier or some clear baubles from a tree branch to dine beneath; • Float a plethora of candles in the pool; • Don’t just decorate your indoor tree – drape some seed lights or hang a cluster of giant red orbs on a welcoming tree. CENTRE STAGE Every table needs a good centrepiece, but what is going to be your focal point this year? • Group gold or black votive stars (try Redcurrent) as a table centrepiece or to mark each place setting; • Fill tall glass vases or candle holders with shiny baubles in your favourite hues. If you’re crafty, spray paint some pine cones in candy pink or aqua and add to the mix; • Stuff a glass trifle bowl or glass box with candy canes – the clever ones among you could even arrange your flowers in this; • For something bold, try wrapping the front door. A strong statement to impress guests on arrival.

AWARD-WINNING

ARCHITECTURE As new buildings and restorations emerge in our city you can rest easy knowing they are setting a benchmark for architectural design in New Zealand. Words Richard Dalman

A

t the 2017 New Zealand Architecture Awards, two Christchurch builds were standouts – the Christchurch Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall by Warren and Mahoney Architects, and Chapel Street Centre by Dalman Architects. These two projects, whittled down from a range of regional winners, were the only two national award winners from Canterbury. Run by the New Zealand Institute of Architects, with the support of Resene, the 2017 New Zealand Architecture Awards recognise the best work across all types of projects designed by New Zealand’s architects. The awards demonstrate the

value of architects, and what can be achieved on any given budget. Buildings need not be humdrum, but can be works of art that are fit for the client’s purpose whilst benefiting the community. Louise Wright, who led the awards jury said, “New Zealanders have increasingly high expectations of the buildings in which they live, work and study, and the cities they inhabit, and rightly so. The quality of the built environment makes a real difference to people’s lives, and it is up to architects, and everyone in the building industry, to make the most of every construction opportunity… Whether they are houses or offices or schools or churches, they are all making a real difference to the lives of the people who use them.” Fifty-one buildings, in locations spanning the country from the Bay of Islands to Queenstown, were shortlisted in the 2017 New Zealand Architecture Awards. The restored Christchurch Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall was awarded a New Zealand Architecture Heritage Award,

Buildings need not be humdrum, but can be works of art that are fit for the client’s purpose whilst benefiting the community. and described by the awards jury as follows: “The complex, post-earthquake restoration and seismic strengthening of two components of a highly significant Christchurch complex of Victorian buildings has been achieved with exemplary care and respect for both the architectural legacy of Benjamin Mountfort and heritage conservation principles. Good decisions were made throughout this project, which called for painstaking attention to detail and the faithful replication of the existing building fabric. It was important for the city that the Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall were brought back to life: the excellence of the buildings’ restoration matches their status in civic life and communal memory.” Personally, I love the Great Hall. It is one of Christchurch’s great interior spaces, and with the Town Hall’s auditorium and the Provincial Council Chambers out of action (the latter mostly demolished), perhaps it is the best. Christchurch’s second award-winning building was Chapel Street Centre in Harewood Road, which won a New Zealand

Architecture Public Award. The awards jury said: “This church does not just communicate its function, but also invites observation of the congregation at worship. The idea, successfully realised, was to replace a parish church damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes with a building that would be open, transparent and welcoming. The new church is nicely proportioned; the worship hall, with its ceiling that rises into a spire that serves as both light well and lantern, is naturally the star of the show, but ancillary spaces such as the foyer, music room, sports hall and kitchen have all received careful attention. The building has a relaxed generosity and pleasant manner: down to earth, but also light in spirit.” While it is always gratifying to be recognised by our peers, winning awards isn’t the reason why architects do what they do. As architects, we are passionate about creating great buildings and spaces for our clients and community to enhance how we all live, work and play.

ESCAPISM 101 The destination for someone’s ultimate summer escape can take on many guises. For some, the view from the deck might be critical; for others a lack of civilisation could be paramount. Words Kate Preece TAKE ME TO THE BEACH If sand in-between your toes is key to making your summer sing, you clearly chose the right island to live on. We don’t even need to cross the Strait to experience golden sands of the upper South Island or black sands of the West Coast. Family visits to Kaiteriteri and Totaranui are practically a rite of passage for South Island kids.

STYLE | home

If you do fly north for the summer, Mt Maunganui and Piha often rustle up the prizes when lists are drawn up. Surely you can’t argue with Ninety Mile Beach getting a look in either. However, when you are the backdrop to films, including The Piano and Xena, Warrior Princess (good ol’ Lucy Lawless), it’s little wonder Karekare Beach, on Auckland’s west coast, was named the second best beach in the world, second only to L’Espiguette Beach, in France, by a US magazine called Passport. International favourite: If you’re a little sick of bumping into people you know on a Kiwi beach, pack your togs for Seychelles – where the sand is described as ‘talcum powder’. Though plan B would have to be Harbour Island on the Bahamas, as this remote destination offers pink sands – something different for Kiwis. Style local: After many arguments in the office, we had to agree to disagree on our fave waterside haven. The vote was split between anywhere within The Sounds and the Southern Lakes.

BAGS PACKED FOR THE BACH There are different levels of escapism to achieve here. Is it about leaving the world behind, or taking it with you? If you can’t stand the thought of sitting idle at any moment, your holiday house is going to have to be well equipped. This might be as simple as having a heated swimming pool, perhaps a sauna, or, on the extreme end of the scale, choosing a place with a private water park. Celine Dion and her husband, who has since died, knew how to put all the cherries on top when they developed their Florida property to include two swimming pools, two water slides and water cannons. Despite being a stone’s throw from a white sand beach, occupants are likely to be kept well entertained within the property’s twohectare perimeter. When getting away means leaving everything behind, eco-friendly retreats become the ones to seek. Remote access goes from meaning ‘I can work from home’ to ‘My convertible isn’t going to handle that slope’, and you can forget about digital devices. International favourite: We’ve fallen in love with a place that has it all – an architecturally-designed home that rises out of sand dunes in Portugal. Casa do Pego is a three-bedroom home that also boasts its own heated pool, though metres from Pego Beach, which is known for its top quality water and silken sands. Its rural, isolated and the lap of luxury.

Bookabach’s Supreme Bach of the Year ‘On the Beach Whangamata’ was not only considered to have the best setting due to unobstructed views but commended for its interior styling, too. Closer to home, we still think Pure Pods are pretty unique – offering full digital detox, inside one heck of a glass box.

Motor Yacht A

SAIL AWAY WITH ME It doesn’t really matter what type of boat you have as long as you are out on the water... Yeah, right. Cruising around Croatia on a gin palace trumps a dinghy on Lake Ellesmere any day. Though it’s true that many devoted boaties hold disdain for the gin palaces that are full to the gunnels with mod cons and rely more on computer wizardry and motors than wind to get them places, when you have a lot of dosh, you may as well step out onto the water like you mean it. International favourite: With three swimming pools (one glass bottomed), helipad and below-deck disco, Motor Yacht A is a particularly super, superyacht. Twelve guests can comfortably make use of the six cabins, and might even find themselves in the secret ‘nookie room’ behind a section of mirrored panels, hiding from the 42 crew members. Designed by Frenchman Philippe Starck, who was commissioned by Russian billionaire Audrey Melnichenko, the 119-metre yacht will reach a maximum speed of 23 knots and cruises at 19 knots. Style local: Billionaire Graeme Hart seems to be the Kiwi who knows his stuff when it comes to gin palace. He’s just sold one of his and it had a pool, jacuzzi, gym, movie room, wine cellar, helipad, watersports equipment, and more, within its 107-metre structure. Ulysses sold for $265 million, but we’re eager to see what Hart replaces it with – as he won’t be content with just the 77m Weta.

A PLACE TO

GARDEN Craig Wilson highlights the building blocks required to start growing a fruitful, flower-filled garden.

ne of the most requested elements by my design clients is a low-maintenance garden. I can personally understand this as my young family and other commitments mean I don't have lots of time to spend in my own garden. Occasionally I meet a client who is a true garden enthusiast and wants a beautiful and intricate garden, and has both the time and inclination to trim, prune, divide, deadhead and, yes, even pull weeds. What that garden looks like varies according to its owner, but there are some key elements to put in place to create a genuine “gardener’s” garden. One of the key components of a beautiful garden is beautiful soil. They simply go hand in hand. Christchurch soils vary in quality but tend to be clay-based and may require modification to achieve good growing conditions. This may involve adding organic content through compost. If you are in a new subdivision you may have significant soil compaction to address before you contemplate any garden at all. Specific site drainage may also be required. The goal is to create an organic, rich soil with a freedraining, friable structure and a balanced

pH level (a measure of the acidity and alkalinity in soils). Once you have the soils dealt with, make sure your plant purchases are well-grown, quality specimens. Canterbury has many nurseries producing great plants. Choose healthy-looking plants with fresh growth and a good developing structure. To really thrive and put on a good show, your beautiful garden will need a regular watering and fertilising schedule through our warmer seasons and access and uptake to the right nutrients to ensure your plants will put on strong healthy new growth, and flower and fruit when you want them to. A deep layer of mulch is the icing on your garden cake. This will help your garden retain precious moisture in summer, suppress weed growth throughout the year and look great to boot. If you have the time and energy to dedicate to the annual rhythms of a beautiful garden, your investment will be returned with a living, breathing, constantly changing entity that will bring you therapy, joy and a deep sense of connection to your own plot of land.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS with Tim Goom

Harden up and take a concrete pill! The sun is out and it is time to start moving the entertaining from indoors to out! As the cold weather abates, turn your mind to contemplating your outdoor spaces. Warmer weather is not only conducive to planting - it is also the perfect time for hardscaping projects. Concrete is an incredibly malleable material and presents countless design opportunities. Some shy away from concrete because of an outdated perception it is ubiquitous and drab compared with other hardscaping options such as decking and paving. However concrete is having a renaissance. It is increasingly appreciated for its innovative aesthetic potential, its functionality and its structural strength. Some of the benefits of concrete include: • Versatility: Concrete can be shaped and poured in to many different forms. It provides great versatility as it can work to levels and be poured for specific falls. Tiles and pavers are limited to an extent by their dimensions which also changes the aesthetic compared with the seamless flow of concrete. The potential for creativity with concrete goes well beyond patios, paths and driveways - think precast panels, floating steps, curved steps, stepping stones, fire hearths, and floating benchtops! Integrated lighting can be set into your concrete (for example step lights) so the surface is illuminated at night but remains uninterrupted. • A variety of surfaces: It used to be that you could have any shade of concrete - as long as it was grey! This is no longer the case. There are now a multitude of finishes, colours and textures. Finishes can range from having an effect created by sponges, rollers or brooms. Concrete can also include shots of colour when poured for a vast range of coloured effects. Oxides incorporated into the concrete before it is poured will darken its tone. Exposed Ag creates a wonderfully textured appearance - some complain it can be tough on bare feet, but we have perfected our own specialist brew to minimise this.

A LifespaceTM you are proud of.

by Goom Another increasingly popular finish is exposing the concrete with acid for a stunning marbled effect. • Easy care: The maintenance required for concrete is minimal. It can be sealed or not depending on its location. If you are concerned about staining (for example from vehicle oil on a concrete driveway), applying a sealant will be beneficial. At times, sealant may make the surface more prone to slipping, especially if it’s in an area prone to surface water, such as round a pool - so adding grit to the sealant will give the surface grip. If concrete needs refreshing it is as simple as water blasting and resealing - and this should only need doing every couple of years. • Durable: Concrete is incredibly durable and offers structural stability to hardscaping. The appropriate mix of the concrete will depend on the area in which it is being used. Concrete used in driveways will need to be of a higher quality mix than in pathways due to the extra loading and will require a longer curing time before use. Compared with paving, decking and brickwork, concrete is a significantly more economic option, especially for larger areas. Pouring and preparing concrete is however more of an art than a science. Factors such as the weather on the day, the temperature and the mixture of the brew will all affect how fast the concrete sets and the result you achieve. Goom Landscapes can discuss how the specific features of concrete can be incorporated into your landscape to enhance its functionality and aesthetic.

LIFE

Timaru-based artist Debbie Templeton-Page uses blue stone to explore life’s meaning. Words Anne Hudson

hree-dimensional work created from clay, marble or stone is the result of a primary association with the material that forms the basis of aesthetic experience. The artist or craftsperson works directly with the material and is guided in part by its intrinsic nature. Debbie Templeton-Page immerses herself in the process feeling at one with the material. She is of Australian Aboriginal descent and like many indigenous people feels a connection to place and time that is difficult to explain other than through art. Artists that work with clay and stone often talk about an embodied feeling – a haptic sense where the mind and body work together to create the work. In creating a work in this way the viewer or owner of the finished work can also find this connection through touch and observation. It is a mysterious process whereby the work is never completely finished because at each stage, whether the material is inert in the ground, in the hand of the maker or in the possession of an art lover, each brings their understanding and experience to the work. Debbie says that once introduced to sculpture and carving work from rock she felt driven to work almost obsessively. Like many sculptors, Debbie enjoys the blue stone, New Zealand basalt on which Timaru her home sits. This black-grey rock with seams of bubbles formed in the heat of volcanic activity creates the basis of much of her current work. She is however a versatile artist and also creates sculptures from marble and bronze. Her subject matter – guardian figures and multi-headed women – shows a complexity of thought both philosophical and spiritual. This

interesting work, where two heads or more appear in one sculpture, explains the multifaceted nature of life. They demonstrate how as individuals we can have a face we show the world, another we show our loved ones, and maybe even another that only we know. Her guardian figures feel like a link to our past, maybe ancestors or those that walk with us. Grouped in threes or more they provide a presence wherever they are placed, reminding us of the interconnections we have with others and with nature. Debbie was looking for the meaning of life through reading, travel and meditation but in her vocation as a sculptor she may have found that meaning. Debbie has energy and a zest for life and an enthusiasm that can be described as eccentric or, as her daughter describes her, “quirky”. She works in her York St Gallery in Timaru, and has won several awards and commissions. Each year at Art in a Garden, Hawarden, Debbie exhibits a diverse range of sculpture and is always popular with buyers. When you see her work next, remember that there is more to the object than how it appears. At the hands of the artist you are being given a link with nature and the world around you. Good sculpture endures.

We Know Girls Our legacy, Our girls, Our Year

Fish and chips wrapped in bedsheets, hoisted to an upper level of the old Rangi Ruru boarding house, this is just one of the stories told by the Gibson Girls, the original students taught by the Gibson Sisters who founded Rangi Ruru Girl’s School in 1889. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea together with the Gibson Girls on November 24th and they spent time with some of our younger students. The New Zealand Mounted Games Under 17 team won the world championships in Auckland on November 26th and in that team was a Rangi Ruru student, Leah Zydenbos. Leah did us all proud and has worked exceptionally hard to achieve what she has.

DEBBIE TEMPLETON-PAGE In the October edition of Style, photographs of work by Debbie Templeton-Page were incorrectly attributed to Doug Neil. Both work with the NZ basalt or blue stone but their artworks are quite different. We apologise to Debbie and Doug and have included a photograph (below) of Doug’s work to make this clear.

High School Musical (Junior) performed with Christ’s College ran from 22-25 November in our Merivale Lane Theatre and this year, was the hottest ticket in town. Never before has our school show sold out so fast. Not just once, but the extra show and then the extra extra show. That’s almost 900 tickets snapped up. All of the actors performed very professionally, putting in so much hard work. Thank you to our exceptional staff and of course our parents without whom we could not achieve what we do. Another fantastic turn out from our Rangi Community for our annual Year 7 and 8 Market Day on November 27th with blue sky, sun and bartering everywhere. It’s part of the girls’ studies, to plan a business project which culminates in the running of a market stall at school. Sharing their generosity of spirit the girls each donated funds to their chosen charity. By the time you read this, we will have held our Clan Christmas Services when we reflect on our achievements and experiences, celebrating the end of another year. The number of scholarships, and academic and personal achievements this year has been outstanding. The Rangi Ruru Old Girls Association School Ball will be held on Thursday 7th December at Wigram Airforce Musuem. This is a significant event for our senior girls as they leave Rangi Ruru and officially become Old Girls, and continue the long-lasting legacy of the Gibson Sisters. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and summer break, and here’s to an exciting and happy 2018.

Granted, the glass is nearly 1m tall and contains a jerboam (3 litres) of Champagne and bottle of rum, but still. You would hope it had been a good year.

No tenants = $0 income.

SLEEPING ON A CLOUD

If you have long-haul in your sights, you’ll want to check out how Singapore Airlines’ new A380 defines first class. There’s mood lighting, a sliding door, an ensuite wardrobe to hang your jacket and store your cabin luggage, a vanity counter in the bathroom and your own sleeper suit and slippers from Lalique. The single suites can transform into one double that boasts a flat double bed.

FULL CIRCLE

Why hang flowers alone, when you could add a smattering of diamonds and rubies, too? VeryFirstTo produces a 60cm wreath that features Laurus, lingonberry and blueberry stems, alongside at least one helleborus flower head that boasts 22 loose diamonds. There are rubies, too, making up the 138.38 carat piece, which boasts a 3.03 yellow diamond. Though the flowers may turn up their toes at season’s end, the stones are all removable, to ensure each Christmas is as bejewelled as the one before it.

CRACKER DAY

You can’t deny the fact that Christmas isn’t Christmas without a suitably naff combination of paper crown, trinket and lame joke. Bring in the Christmas crackers. But wait… why not leave those at the kids’ table and find something better for the adults? We found Drinks by the Dram has the answer. You can have your hat and joke, but wash it down with a 30ml dram of whiskey, gin or liqueur! The six-packs feature a different type of your liquor of choice in each cracker, or pick your favourite – say, the Port Askaig 8 Year Old – and all recipients will get the same drop. We expect some real fights over who ‘won’ the cracker over these beauties.

GIFTING FOR THE

WELL GROOMED Gilbert Wealleans walks us through the ideal presents for those who enjoy a good shave.

shavers come in both wet and dry models, the former may be used with lather.

N

ow with the pudding season nigh, thoughts turn to presents and what to purchase. Consider the original gifts of the Three Wise Chaps to the Christ Child; gold, myrrh and frankincense. Impractical today as gold is ferociously expensive and there is probably some biohazard restriction on importing myrrh. As for frankincense, the only places in which one is likely to find that nowadays are Roman Catholic, Orthodox or High Anglican cathedrals and the clergy at one’s local “bells and smells” church would be more than a little cheesed off if they caught one pilfering the thurible (chuck that word into your next Scrabble game!) So, for the modern gent about the world, there can be no better gift than some smashing shaving tackle, begging the question, what do you fancy? There’s a huge variety of electric and traditional wet shaving razors, both cartridge and doubleedge safety models and you will need the appropriate accessories. ELECTRIC: Face cleansers and pre-shaves: Both essential to remove dead skin cells, oils and well, dirt, all of which inhibit a smooth shave. Pre-shave lotions, powders, and gels tighten and lubricate the skin causing hairs to stand up, preventing irritation. Electric

TRADITIONAL WET SHAVING: The holy trinity of traditional wet shaving comprises an excellent shaving soap/cream, brush and razor. In cartridge razors, Gillette and Schick are the leaders. For the gent who desires a shave experience above the ordinary, the double-edge safety razor stands out. Many models are on the market with modern, innovative designs offsetting traditional ones. Sold mostly online, an internet search will bring up a multitude of sellers, although specialist shops and pharmacies stock them. DE safety razors are manufactured worldwide including the UK, Europe, USA and Asia. Brands include Taylor of Old Bond Street, Muhle, Merkur, Rockwell, and Edwin Jagger. Also Fatip from Italy, Feather, Parker and Wilkinson. You will need blades, so be prepared to wade through a bogglingly wide ocean of brands and choices! BRUSHES: Available in natural and synthetic bristles, a brush whips up a rich, thick creamy lather conditioning skin and stubble and enabling an easy, smooth shave. Synthetic brushes are hygienic and easy to clean and, like horse hair, no animal is killed nor injured to produce them. Brushes are available in a range of prices and sizes, online and in stores. SOAPS, CREAMS AND SHAVING OILS: The choice is truly stunning! Shaving cream comes

in pots and tubes, whilst soap comes in cakes or sticks. Shaving oils can be used with or without lather and are wonderful for touching up and finishing off a shave on the final pass. Available in a wide variety of brands, scents and qualities from commercial to handmade artisan types. Of note are Proraso from Italy, Taylor of Old Bond Street and DR Harris, both from the UK, and Arko from Turkey. Both Crabtree and Evelyn and L’Occitane have a comprehensive range of shaving and grooming products which, like Proraso, are reasonably widely available in shops and online. AFTERSHAVE: Alcohol-free are best as they soothe and moisturise without stinging or drying out the skin. Old Spice, Tabac and Brut are traditional classics but do contain alcohol. Also look for Proraso, Lucky Tiger, Nivea, Taylor of Old Bond Street and DR Harris among many others. Don’t forget styptic pencils and alum blocks, which stem the occasional cuts and nicks and soothe accidently irritated skin. Shaving tackle may be purchased separately as well as in sets with prices to suit any budget, but it is advisable to buy the best quality that is affordable as these are fine products which will last. So good luck then with your odyssey of finding the perfect face grooming gift for the man/men in your life, or for yourself, and a very merry and non-hirsute Christmas to one and all!

everyday activities, you are achieving more than you would expect. Isometrics is said to help slim the waist, increase strength and decrease blood pressure. So, start by thinking about your muscles; then, step things up a gear by applying the same theory to these simple exercises that can be done anywhere.

CLENCH & GO

The silly season is kicking into gear and there’s barely enough time to think, let alone exercise… so, here are a few sneaky ways to squeeze some exercise time into your jam-packed schedule.

T

here is a form of exercising that focuses on tensing your muscles, and as such can be done anywhere, anytime. My 96-year-old step-grandmother-in-law let me in on this secret, and considering she walks to the supermarket for her daily supplies and can still manage a long haul flight from San Jose to Christchurch, I listened. Nellie introduced me to isometrics. And her interpretation means that no matter what task you are doing, you should think about the muscles you are using. Engage your stomach muscles while you sit up straight; tense your bicep while you vacuum; think about your glutes when you crouch. By being aware of your muscles, and tensing them while you go about

MASTERING ISOMETRICS Palms Together: Push your hands together as hard as you can, and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat. Core Work: Tighten your stomach muscles, while holding your feet about 10cm off the ground. Increase the resistance by using your hands to push down on your knees, while maintaining the height of your feet off the floor. Hold for 30 seconds, and repeat. Thigh Time: While standing, lift one leg until your thigh is perpendicular to the ground. Use one or both hands to push down on the raised leg, at the same time as you continue to lift it upward to maintain its level. Hold for 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat. Bye-bye Butt: Lie on the ground with your knees bent and arms at your sides. Lift your hips off the ground by pressing down on your palms and feet. Clench your glutes. Focus on pushing your weight through to your heels. Hold for 30 seconds. Don’t let your hips sink!

EXTRAORDINARY

NEW YEAR DESTINATIONS Fireworks in Hagley Park on a balmy summer evening are all very nice, but if you’ve a hankering to escape the ordinary may we suggest these celebrations of a full year’s rotation around the sun. Words Gaynor Stanley

St Petersburg

STYLE | travel

67

Like the idea of the sky lanterns, but not the chilblains? Every year, thousands upon thousands of candle-lit lanterns are released on the evening of 31 December around Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai to herald good luck for the new year. Simply breathtaking! Chiang Mai

RING IN THE NEW YEAR, TWICE You can only celebrate New Year’s Eve once a year... on a budget. Those with well-endowed wallets can fly to Australia, party until midnight at the Sydney Opera House, then hop on the world’s fastest private jet, PrivateFly’s Gulfstream G650ER, for a 9.5-hour zip to Honolulu to do it all again. Charter the entire plane with 12 besties for a mere AUD$290,000. Bonus points for staying awake the entire time. Another way to manipulate time and celebrate twice over, is to board an eastbound cruise liner that crosses the International Dateline so you can party in Pago Pago and onboard ship the next night enroute to Bora Bora. PUT NEW YEAR ON ICE For the ultimate adventure in luxury, board the Silver Explorer expedition ship on its new year cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula from Ushuaia at the southernmost tip of Argentina. That will set you back a cool $40,000. One of the hottest, yet chilliest, celebrations on the planet happens on a massive scale in Iceland’s party capital Reykjavik. Celebrations start at 6pm with mass at the city’s cathedral before everyone heads outdoors to gather round neighbourhood bonfires to burn away the woes of the previous year. Thousands of fireworks and maybe even the Northern Lights will light up the night sky. Expect big drinking, folk songs and people dressed as trolls and elves and a restorative early morning soak in the hot pools. It’s said no one celebrates new year like the Russians, so triple-layer your thermals and embrace the winter wonderland that is St Petersburg. Its fabulous palaces, boulevards and bridges are at their most dazzling covered in snow and illuminated in white lights. Join the crowds at the Hermitage Museum to await the huge fireworks show over the Neva River – and be prepared to sip your “Soviet champagne” well into the wee hours (we’re talking 3am fireworks). The President’s address, live music, and hundreds of paper lanterns launching into the sky fill the wait. Reykjavik

68 STYLE | travel

Superstitions also ring in the new year in Slovakia’s Bratislava, where the locals twirl noisy wooden noisemakers called rehtackas to chase away any negative energy from the past year as they stroll the Old Town ‘concert zone’ or ‘party zone’. Bratislava Rio de Janiero

WHITE HOT DESTINATIONS Another city that turns white to celebrate Réveillon is Rio de Janiero. It’s mandatory to don white clothing as it symbolises good luck for the next year, and head to a luxury nightspot or the waterfront to party. My best new year ever (and there’s been some good ones – Sydney 2000, Hogmanay in Edinburgh) was spent on the white sands of Copacabana. The beach is so long and so wide, two million people pack in to samba till dawn to the beats from huge stages featuring some mega stars. Despite the crowd and the caiproska and beer stalls right on the beach, the atmosphere is chilled and joyous. Brazilians just want to have fun. We made friends with locals who introduced us to the tradition of offering gladiolis to Yemanja, the goddess of the sea, and jumping the waves seven times for luck. There’s the obligatory fireworks, too, fired from a flotilla of cruise ships anchored in Guanabara Bay. Ivory tsungas optional. Another South American hotspot that attracts millions to its celebration is across the Andes in Chile. The gorgeous port city of Valparaiso is known for its colourful buildings and murallined alleys so it’s apt the locals wear yellow underwear to bring good luck in the coming year. That and eating a dozen grapes at midnight and putting a $1000 peso note in their shoe! Its fireworks display is the biggest in Latin America, launching from multiple points along the 8km coastline to Vina del Mar. And the Chileans are equally good as their neighbours at partying until dawn. Across the hemisphere, Cape Town brings in the new year with the four-day minstrel carnival called Kaapse Klopse when thousands of fabulously dressed Cape Minstrels take over the streets of the Mother City. Big brass bands lead raucous road marches called Nagtroepe on the last two days of the year and the historic Second New Year Street Parade, also known as Tweede Nuwejaar, on 2 January. The processions date back to the mid-nineteenth century when slaves were given one day off in the year (2 January). To celebrate, groups would dress up as minstrels, waving parasols, strumming banjos and making merry with music, dance and a parade from the District Six area through to the city centre. Many of the songs still sung today date back to the 1800s.

New Orleans doesn’t just party at Mardi Gras. The southern city rivals New York for new year revelry. It has one of the US’s best fireworks displays, over the Mississippi River, as well as the ‘Fleur de Lis drop’ from the roof of the Jax Brewery at Jackson Square, reminiscent of the ‘Times Square Ball drop’.

From Hakii Design comes the hGroov, a set of rechargeable, waterproof and wireless earbuds that provide three hours of music before use of the wireless charging mat is required. With three different-sized covers in each package, you can be assured a fit will be found, so the fear of them falling out mid-jog or mid-phone call becomes irrational. At the time of print, the company was running a Kickstart compaign that would see pledgers receive their hGroovs in March 2018.

TECHNOLOGY

For those who love a gadget, check out these novel ideas.

APP OF THE MONTH: THINK DIRTY

‘Think Dirty – Shop Clean’ is a free app that offers consumers a way to learn about the toxicity of their cosmetics and personal-care products. By scanning the barcodes on common bathroom items such as shampoos, face creams and lippies, a score out of 10 on the app’s self-decreed ‘Dirty Meter’ assesses the long-term effect the ingredients could potentially have. You might be surprised to see how your ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘all natural’ products rate.

HIGH TECH PROTECTION

If you’ve kept up with the latest models in the smartphone and tablet arenas, you will want to protect your new toys. Tech21’s cases will keep that iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 safe from accidental, yet inevitable falls – the cases promising to keep your device in one piece after drops of up to three metres. We like the idea of the Evo Wallet, which includes concealed storage for your two most-used cards.

EUROPEAN

ESCAPE

Motoring writer Ross Kiddie says the new Ford Escape is a cross between a sports utility vehicle and a sports car.

E

scape has been a popular brand for Ford New Zealand. That being the case, I was surprised when the name of the sport utility vehicle was dropped in favour of Kuga. The latter also sold well, but now Ford has reverted back to Escape, the latest name change also coinciding with a new release. Those who do relate to the old Escape will be aware of its pedigree, it was a model shared similarly with Mazda (Tribute) in New Zealand and had its origins in Taiwan. The new Escape is totally different. It is now sourced from Europe, Spain to be exact, and unlike its V6 predecessor it has only four cylinders, but there are many varying engine types – diesel and petrol and in 1.5-litre or 2-litre capacity. The range is extensive with seven models starting from $37,990, some offered in four-wheel-drive. The test car was Titanium-badged and sits in the line-up at $53,490, there is only one model with a higher ticket and that is the diesel powered version with the same specification ($54,990). The 2-litre petrol, all-wheel-drive variant is certainly a worthy choice, the Escape in this form is a cross between the traditional SUV and a sports car, that comment simply because of its engine output, it is rated at 178kW and 345Nm.

That’s mostly due to the turbocharging system fitted to the twin-camshaft, 16-valve unit, it offers significant boost at a low operating area. Peak power arrives at just 5500rpm while maximum torque is available all of the way from 2000rpm to 4500rpm. The significance of those figures is the punchy way the engine works. It is feisty and lively, yet it delivers with little audible sound. If you also factor in the way power is transferred through a silky smooth six-speed automatic gearbox, the driveline is structured for quick momentum with a responsive nature. The Escape in this form will accelerate from a standstill in 8sec and will complete an overtaking time of 4.9sec to make 120km/h from 80km/h. My comments about sports car performance aren’t an exaggeration. Ford is quite proud of its Ecoboost range of engines, they have been developed not so much for the performance I’ve just commented on, but they also stand out for their economy. As it turned out I drove the new Escape at city speeds for a fair chunk of my evaluation and that wasn’t kind to the economy, the fuel usage readout listing around 10.6-litres per 100km (27mpg) when I took the car back to the dealership. That’s quite distant to Ford’s combined average cycle claim of 8.6l/100km (33mpg), but that’s put into perspective when you take into account the 6.2l/100km (46mpg) sitting instantaneously at a steady 100km/h, the engine turning over at just 1750rpm. The evaluation car was riding on sport specification Continental tyres (235/45 x 19in). With their wide footprint and formidable reputation there is a lot of steering feel and strong self-centering feel within the steering

mechanism. Turn-in is direct and accuracy within the handling process is positive. I particularly like the way the Escape handles, and that doesn’t surprise me. I’m a big European Ford fan, and the way the designers engineer balance and handling ability into the chassis of all their varying model styles is a credit. The Escape is also fitted with state-of-theart gear for comfort, convenience and safety. Some of the major items include full leather trim with heated front seats, satellite navigation, full length electric sunroof, voice recognition communication and infotainment, and radar cruise control. Of course, it is also five-star safety rated.

I was a little ambivalent when I picked up the Escape, I knew that its engine wouldn’t live up to the thrill of the old Volvo-derived, 2.5-litre, turbo five-cylinder unit found in some variants of the old Kuga, still one of my favourite engines. That being the case, the Escape’s 2-litre engine had to really work hard to win me over and I should have known it wouldn’t disappoint. Its honesty, power outputs and generally quiet operating manner make it a real honey. Just as well, then, that the rest of the vehicle has the quality to support it; the entire package is quite outstanding. It will certainly lure Escape buyers of old, and those who are contemplating trading up from Kuga.

FINANCIAL

TO GIVE YOUR KIDS

Toys and gadgets can be broken or outgrown, and there are smarter gestures than giving hard cash. Lifetime financial advisor Allan McNaughton reveals the most beneficial ways to spoil your children or grandkids this festive season.

G

iving financial gifts at Christmas is gaining popularity as parents look beyond conventional presents and treat their children to gifts that will keep giving for years to come. I have always bought my children a smaller, tangible gift and put financial clout behind more meaningful presents that empower them to achieve a financial head start in life. Here are seven great options to consider every Christmas and birthday.

1. PERSONAL FINANCE BOOKS AND BOARD GAMES Teaching your children financial literacy is a gift that can outlive you – and best of all it’s not too early to start discussing big-picture concepts such as saving and liabilities versus assets with children as young as six or seven. Classics such as Rich Dad, Poor Dad are a great way to instil a financially savvy and entrepreneurial mindset; opt for the board game version if you have younger kids or the hardcopy book for teens. As they get older, New Zealand-born Martin Hawes’ Financial Secrets and Mary Holm's Get Rich Slow make great gifts. 2. BUY HEALTH INSURANCE You can ensure your children and grandchildren’s continued wellbeing by taking out health insurance for them, often from approximately $300 per year. One of the major benefits of gifting them a health insurance policy at a young age is that the cost of a premium is determined by the age of the policy holder which, given if they are healthy, will be a lower rate the younger they are. The younger the child the more likely the policy is to have fewer exclusions, too. This also means your grandchild or child can use a private hospital if required and not have to go on waitlist within the public system.

3. A KIWISAVER TOP-UP Gifting $500 directly into your child’s Kiwisaver is a powerful way to invest in their future. Not only does it boost their financial standing at retirement, it teaches them to plan ahead and introduces the concept of delayed gratification. If you wanted to, for other gift-giving occasions, you could add a little more money to the fund. Who knows? Over time they may be in a position to withdraw a deposit for their first home. If you encouraged all close family and friends to contribute, the fund will soon grow. 4. STOCK MARKET COURSE FOR TEENS Demystify the stock market by sending your teens on a course to teach them how financial markets operate. Part of your gift could include $100 for them to invest directly online from their mobile phone once they’ve completed the course so that they can put their newfound knowledge to the test. By teaching them about the ups and downs of the stock market, you’re reinforcing the active role they need to take in growing their money. 5. INVESTMENT FUND TO HELP THEM REALISE THEIR DREAMS A clever way to help your children squeeze out the very best experiences once they reach adulthood is to open an investment

account for them when they’re young for them to use at 18 or 21. With an annual contribution of $1000 or less a year, you could essentially fund their gap year, or a post-graduate degree overseas. It might encourage your child to squirrel away their pocket money or holiday job earnings to save even more, and teaches them about the power of compound interest. 6. TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR THEIR GAP YEAR Paying for comprehensive travel insurance that covers both their belongings and health is a great gift to give your 17-year-old embarking on his/her first trip overseas. Not only may it keep them safe, it offers you peace of mind knowing they are protected. 7. THEIR FIRST INCOME PROTECTION POLICY To a 20-something who would much rather be spending their spare cash on entertainment and new clothing, taking out an income protection plan can seem like a drag. By taking it out for them for the first year once they’ve secured their first job, you are instilling great financial habits that will benefit them in the long run and demonstrating to them the necessity of protecting income.

PEANUT BUTTER NUTTERS Everybody's adding the good stuff to their baking this season. From Cookie Time to Cakes By Anna (CBA), we're all about lacing our treats with peanut butter right now. We recommend CBA's decadent flourless chocolate cake. Mixed with super crunchy Fix and Fogg peanut butter, then layered with peanut butter buttercream before being topped with caramel, pistachios, white chocolate and raspberries. Need we say more?

GRAZING TABLES December is officially upon us, which means summer holidays and celebrations! Our favourite way to host a special occasion is with indulgent platters piled high. Bespoke Platters are our go-to for grazing tables, ideal for any gathering with all products locally sourced throughout Canterbury. Think Le Panier breads, Canterbury Cheesemonger cheeses and meats from Cashmere Cuisine.

SILLS & CO OPENING

I

t was all hands on deck when Sills& Co grandly opened early one spring evening as Papanui Road was buzzing with swarms of workers answering the homeward call. Not bound for domesticity though, were the invitees who gathered to welcome the boutique to Merivale. The store shone like a beacon to seekers after fine dressing who, taking advantage of the fine evening and gentle temperature, mingled in the sumptuously catered conviviality.

ithin the neo-gothic edifice which commands with dignity the elegant Worcester Boulevard, a new era in shopping was beginning. Along the former halls of learning, modern sounds of celebration were heard as Shopology was launched. DISCOVER TRAVEL MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS MOVIE NIGHT

T

here was an air of excitement suffusing the foyer at Hoyts Riccarton when Discover Travel hosted a preview party for the premier of Murder On The Orient Express. The anticipation of being transported for an hour or so to exotic locations, sent a thrill through the mingling invitees. Within the depths of the darkened movie house, Agatha Christie’s tale of intrigue and dastardly doings was beginning to play and captivate the audience who, having seen the wonderful locations depicted, may be inspired to travel and discover such places for themselves. CUP WEEK 2017

T

he southern hemisphere’s ultra violet blazed blisteringly down on Addington, seeking out any patch of unshaded fair skin on which to leave a red reminder of Cup Day. The noise and bustle sent thrills and fingers of excitement along nerves as the day unfolded, the elegance of fashion and the drama of on track chariot battles were eagerly anticipated. At the other end of the week of turf-centred entertainment, a gently weathered morning unfolded at Riccarton Park where shaded picnics reeked of understated opulence. In concert with the elegance of race day fashion parades and the relentless on course pursuit, these events brought the champagne-coloured day to a justified rest. Photography: Zoe Williams

PREMIERE OF THE STOLEN AT THE HOLLYWOOD THEATRE

T

he red carpet was rolled out bringing a touch of glamour to Sumner. The crowd was swelling, cheerfully waiting for the stars to appear, not from the sky but out of a stretched limousine. Locally produced movie, The Stolen was being premiered and to the cheers of onlookers, cast members walked the crimson path to the Hollywood Theatre. Cameras clicked and flashguns popped as the festive evening got underway, recalling the golden age of the silver screen when the kings and queens of the celluloid were mobbed and adored for their art.

he bustling urban symphony of rush-hour Glandovey Road seemed a light year away from Lintrathen Gardens. The preview party hosted at the elegant Fendalton estate was blessed by the golden face of afternoon. From the meandering stream, flashes of lively fishes and jewels of reflected sunlight danced together as a languid eel broke the surface to curiously survey the riparian merriment. Within the ultra modern dwellings, guests toured room by room and their compliments were as profuse as summer butterflies.

5 HOSTING WAYS TO SURVIVE

CHRISTMAS

You’ve either drawn the short straw or like the pressure, but whatever the reason, make this Christmas better by taking stress off the menu. 1. Choose dishes that are better on day two. You want to enjoy Christmas Day too, so consider inviting your besties over to celebrate Christmas Eve and whip up a dish or two between wines. 2. Go for platters. Forget about serving up individual plates, that’s far too timeconsuming. Let your guests serve themselves – heck, even let the kids loose, it’s only one day. 3. Carefully consider your condiments. Pickles, chutneys, mustards and relishes will have your guests oohing and aaghing. And it means guests can personalise their meals to their tastes, instead of it being your responsibility. 4. Don’t be a hero! Ask for help. You’ll make your guests more uncomfortable if you don’t let them bring something, so when they ask… say yes! 5. Relax. This isn’t MasterChef, Christmas is about family and friends. If you find yourself surrounded by a table of judges, hand over the reins, or switch out your audience.
