QUEEN OF THE CABARET

As part of the World Buskers Festival, Ali McGregor will astound audiences in the Great Hall (January 18-22).

How do you describe cabaret to the uninitiated? Cabaret is that sweet spot where music, comedy and theatre cross paths. It’s intimate and often personal and I think usually best enjoyed with a drink! You have performed in festivals around the world, from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. What led to your involvement with the World Buskers Festival? My good friend Amy Saunders (Miss Behave) asked me to be a part of the Burlesque Night last year and I was immediately smitten with the Buskers Festival and the Christchurch audience. Some of my favourite people are performing there this year too, so I’m also excited to be there as a punter!

Decadence was born out of my love for both the jazz style of the 1940s and ’50s and the trashiest songs of the ’80s and ’90s. I delve through my greatest and most decadent guilty pleasures from Salt-n-Pepa and The Prodigy, to INXS and Radiohead, and reimagine them as the cabaret mash-ups they have always wanted to be. As the Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, do you find it hard to switch from organiser to performer? Funnily enough I don’t – the last decade of performing in fringe festivals around the world means I am just as at home on stage as I am on an excel spreadsheet and handing out flyers. The beauty of this festival is it is filled with these incredibly innovative performers who, instead of following a more common path directed at stardom, have forged their own independent path towards a life filled with crazy, interesting people and experiences. There isn’t a ‘diva’ in sight… (although there’s no lack of false eyelashes and sequins, don’t get me wrong). What Christmas tradition could you never break? I recently stopped eating meat and dairy and this will be my first vegan-ish Christmas so I am hoping to start some new traditions, but I LOVE me a carols by candlelight (the more local and amateur the choir the better) and have to find a vegan-type Christmas cake recipe because that smell IS Christmas for me. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve? I hate New Year’s Eve. I will be in LA, which sounds glamorous but I daresay I will be drinking gin and eating my body weight in chips while watching Rick and Morty, if I have my way. What are you most looking forward to in 2018? SO. MANY. THINGS. Buskers Festival, debuting my new show about Peruvian soprano Yma Sumac, my last Adelaide Cabaret Festival as Artistic Director, my newly commissioned opera Lorelei for Victorian Opera, and a few other fab things yet to be announced. 2018 is going to be my MINE, ALL MINE!

Ahead of the South Island Open, we caught up with the Style polo team to get to know more about one of the world’s fastest sports. Words Kate Preece Photography Mark McNeill

hampagne glasses clink in the sunshine as eight horses thunder past at speeds of up to 45km/h. A small white ball leads the pack, awaiting the next thwack from a rider’s mallet. The 2500-year-old sport, a favourite of royalty, is at home in Argentina, England and here in Canterbury. The polo season is in full swing, with the Style team in the midst of the South Island Open. Games are played as locally as Wigram and Rangiora, and as far afield as Winchester, and each and every one of them demands, of the players, much more than clean white pants. Charlie Wood, the eldest of three polo-playing brothers from Sefton, will tell you it’s no Pimm’s picnic when you’re on the field. “Horses take a lot of prepwork. There’s the gear, the team, trucks and the grounds that all need to be in condition ahead of a game. Everyone – mostly – in the league will be playing polo full-time, putting in 14-hour days to get everything ready.” It’s just one of the misconceptions polo players come up against. Once people realise this polo isn’t the one played in water, they still think the ball is hit in the same way as croquet – on the smallest face of the mallet’s head. Yet the entire mallet head is used. Players can propel the ball as far as 135m – half a length of the field – which is no mean feat.

While the youngest in the Style team, Lachie Appleby, 16, is studying for exams at Christchurch Boys’ High School, the other three have been playing polo around the world. Both Charlie Wood and Henry Jones have played seasons in England, where you can earn a tidy sum each game, and Henry Wood (the youngest son of local polo legend Roddy Wood) has spent time in Argentina, where polo is the national sport. “It’s [Argentina] the best place in the world to play polo,” Charlie says, no stranger to playing in Nigeria and Iran too. “They are natural horsemen; there’s something about the passion and flair they have for the game. And they make good horses.” Back in Christchurch, the team is set to face five teams over a three-week period, playing one match a day. Each match is divided into seven-and-a-half-minute segments, called chukkas, and with every goal the teams change ends. As the grades go up, so too the does the number of chukkas per game. With breaks between the chukkas, spectators can expect to be sipping on those bubbles for around an hour, so sip slowly, and give thought to the sport of kings and the efforts that have gone on behind the scenes.

7 POLO FACTS 1. You cannot play left-handed. Riders hold the reins in the left hand, and the mallet in the right, end of story. 2. The South Island season is longer than the North Island’s, but the country’s penultimate tournament, the New Zealand Open, is played in Auckland in February. 3. In the last World Polo Championship, NZ was in the top eight, but the first three places went to Argentina, Chile and England. 4. Each player will swap ponies at least once for every chukka. Ponies can be swapped mid-chukka, or as often as every three to four minutes. (Charlie has taken 12 ponies to one game.) 5. All four members of the Style polo team know of someone who has died due to a polo injury. 6. All teams can be mixed as they are rating/handicap based. However, women can play in a women’s only competition if they choose. 7. Unlike jockeys, polo players can be tall. However, it is better for the horse if your weight does not tip the scales too drastically.

At the time of Max’s birth, her parent’s promise was valued at more than $45 billion. Funds will be distributed via the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY Since 2008, Matthew McConaughey (net worth USD$95 million) has been actively helping atrisks teens through non-profit Just Keep Livin’ Foundation. Formed with wife Camila, the goal is to empower high school students with the tools to make positive choices towards active and healthy lives. Programmes are focused on fitness, wellness, nutrition and community service. Running after school, the two-hour classes offer youth a safe place off the streets, away from the dangers and temptations of drug and crime. Around 2500 students in the USA benefit from the charity. In 2015, McConaughey donated the USD$135,000 he was paid by the University of Houston to be the opening speaker at its graduation ceremony back to the charity, and, in 2012 alone, contributed USD$1.5 million.

WILL FERRELL Will Ferrell is an active supporter of Cancer for College, an organisation run by his friend Craig Pollard. The pair met at university, at a time when Pollard had survived two bouts of cancer (at 15 and 19), and then set up a charity in 1993 to award cancer survivors scholarships. The celebrity spokesman for the foundation, Ferrell regularly hosts a golf tournament and stand-up comedy events that bring in sevenfigure sums in fund-raising thanks to his name on the door. The charity has granted more than 1000 scholarships, dishing out more than US$2.5 million. BILL AND MELINDA GATES Together this power couple have donated more than $30.2 billion to charity, most of which is targeted at fighting diseases and improving education around the world. SAM SIMON Most famously known for co-creating The Simpsons, Sam Simon died of colon cancer in 2015, but not before setting up a charitable organisation that offers free veterinary services to cats and dogs owned by low-income families. The Sam Simon Foundation he leaves behind also runs a programme to take dogs from shelters and train them to become hearing dogs, or service dogs for returning veterans suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. Upon his death, Simon split his USD$100 million fortune between the foundation, other charities and animal rights organisations.

t the 2017 New Zealand Architecture Awards, two Christchurch builds were standouts – the Christchurch Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall by Warren and Mahoney Architects, and Chapel Street Centre by Dalman Architects. These two projects, whittled down from a range of regional winners, were the only two national award winners from Canterbury. Run by the New Zealand Institute of Architects, with the support of Resene, the 2017 New Zealand Architecture Awards recognise the best work across all types of projects designed by New Zealand’s architects. The awards demonstrate the

value of architects, and what can be achieved on any given budget. Buildings need not be humdrum, but can be works of art that are fit for the client’s purpose whilst benefiting the community. Louise Wright, who led the awards jury said, “New Zealanders have increasingly high expectations of the buildings in which they live, work and study, and the cities they inhabit, and rightly so. The quality of the built environment makes a real difference to people’s lives, and it is up to architects, and everyone in the building industry, to make the most of every construction opportunity… Whether they are houses or offices or schools or churches, they are all making a real difference to the lives of the people who use them.” Fifty-one buildings, in locations spanning the country from the Bay of Islands to Queenstown, were shortlisted in the 2017 New Zealand Architecture Awards. The restored Christchurch Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall was awarded a New Zealand Architecture Heritage Award,

Good decisions were made throughout this project, which called for painstaking attention to detail and the faithful replication of the existing building fabric. It was important for the city that the Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall were brought back to life: the excellence of the buildings’ restoration matches their status in civic life and communal memory.” Personally, I love the Great Hall. It is one of Christchurch’s great interior spaces, and with the Town Hall’s auditorium and the Provincial Council Chambers out of action (the latter mostly demolished), perhaps it is the best. Christchurch’s second award-winning building was Chapel Street Centre in Harewood Road, which won a New Zealand

Architecture Public Award. The awards jury said: “This church does not just communicate its function, but also invites observation of the congregation at worship. The idea, successfully realised, was to replace a parish church damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes with a building that would be open, transparent and welcoming. The new church is nicely proportioned; the worship hall, with its ceiling that rises into a spire that serves as both light well and lantern, is naturally the star of the show, but ancillary spaces such as the foyer, music room, sports hall and kitchen have all received careful attention. The building has a relaxed generosity and pleasant manner: down to earth, but also light in spirit.” While it is always gratifying to be recognised by our peers, winning awards isn’t the reason why architects do what they do. As architects, we are passionate about creating great buildings and spaces for our clients and community to enhance how we all live, work and play.

If you do fly north for the summer, Mt Maunganui and Piha often rustle up the prizes when lists are drawn up. Surely you can’t argue with Ninety Mile Beach getting a look in either. However, when you are the backdrop to films, including The Piano and Xena, Warrior Princess (good ol’ Lucy Lawless), it’s little wonder Karekare Beach, on Auckland’s west coast, was named the second best beach in the world, second only to L’Espiguette Beach, in France, by a US magazine called Passport. International favourite: If you’re a little sick of bumping into people you know on a Kiwi beach, pack your togs for Seychelles – where the sand is described as ‘talcum powder’. Though plan B would have to be Harbour Island on the Bahamas, as this remote destination offers pink sands – something different for Kiwis. Style local: After many arguments in the office, we had to agree to disagree on our fave waterside haven. The vote was split between anywhere within The Sounds and the Southern Lakes.

GARDEN Craig Wilson highlights the building blocks required to start growing a fruitful, flower-filled garden.

ne of the most requested elements by my design clients is a low-maintenance garden. I can personally understand this as my young family and other commitments mean I don't have lots of time to spend in my own garden. Occasionally I meet a client who is a true garden enthusiast and wants a beautiful and intricate garden, and has both the time and inclination to trim, prune, divide, deadhead and, yes, even pull weeds. What that garden looks like varies according to its owner, but there are some key elements to put in place to create a genuine “gardener’s” garden. One of the key components of a beautiful garden is beautiful soil. They simply go hand in hand. Christchurch soils vary in quality but tend to be clay-based and may require modification to achieve good growing conditions. This may involve adding organic content through compost. If you are in a new subdivision you may have significant soil compaction to address before you contemplate any garden at all. Specific site drainage may also be required. The goal is to create an organic, rich soil with a freedraining, friable structure and a balanced

pH level (a measure of the acidity and alkalinity in soils). Once you have the soils dealt with, make sure your plant purchases are well-grown, quality specimens. Canterbury has many nurseries producing great plants. Choose healthy-looking plants with fresh growth and a good developing structure. To really thrive and put on a good show, your beautiful garden will need a regular watering and fertilising schedule through our warmer seasons and access and uptake to the right nutrients to ensure your plants will put on strong healthy new growth, and flower and fruit when you want them to. A deep layer of mulch is the icing on your garden cake. This will help your garden retain precious moisture in summer, suppress weed growth throughout the year and look great to boot. If you have the time and energy to dedicate to the annual rhythms of a beautiful garden, your investment will be returned with a living, breathing, constantly changing entity that will bring you therapy, joy and a deep sense of connection to your own plot of land.

Harden up and take a concrete pill! The sun is out and it is time to start moving the entertaining from indoors to out! As the cold weather abates, turn your mind to contemplating your outdoor spaces. Warmer weather is not only conducive to planting - it is also the perfect time for hardscaping projects. Concrete is an incredibly malleable material and presents countless design opportunities. Some shy away from concrete because of an outdated perception it is ubiquitous and drab compared with other hardscaping options such as decking and paving. However concrete is having a renaissance. It is increasingly appreciated for its innovative aesthetic potential, its functionality and its structural strength. Some of the benefits of concrete include: • Versatility: Concrete can be shaped and poured in to many different forms. It provides great versatility as it can work to levels and be poured for specific falls. Tiles and pavers are limited to an extent by their dimensions which also changes the aesthetic compared with the seamless flow of concrete. The potential for creativity with concrete goes well beyond patios, paths and driveways - think precast panels, floating steps, curved steps, stepping stones, fire hearths, and floating benchtops! Integrated lighting can be set into your concrete (for example step lights) so the surface is illuminated at night but remains uninterrupted. • A variety of surfaces: It used to be that you could have any shade of concrete - as long as it was grey! This is no longer the case. There are now a multitude of finishes, colours and textures. Finishes can range from having an effect created by sponges, rollers or brooms. Concrete can also include shots of colour when poured for a vast range of coloured effects. Oxides incorporated into the concrete before it is poured will darken its tone. Exposed Ag creates a wonderfully textured appearance - some complain it can be tough on bare feet, but we have perfected our own specialist brew to minimise this.

At times, sealant may make the surface more prone to slipping, especially if it’s in an area prone to surface water, such as round a pool - so adding grit to the sealant will give the surface grip. If concrete needs refreshing it is as simple as water blasting and resealing - and this should only need doing every couple of years. • Durable: Concrete is incredibly durable and offers structural stability to hardscaping. The appropriate mix of the concrete will depend on the area in which it is being used. Concrete used in driveways will need to be of a higher quality mix than in pathways due to the extra loading and will require a longer curing time before use. Compared with paving, decking and brickwork, concrete is a significantly more economic option, especially for larger areas. Pouring and preparing concrete is however more of an art than a science. Factors such as the weather on the day, the temperature and the mixture of the brew will all affect how fast the concrete sets and the result you achieve. Timaru-based artist Debbie Templeton-Page uses blue stone to explore life’s meaning. Words Anne Hudson

hree-dimensional work created from clay, marble or stone is the result of a primary association with the material that forms the basis of aesthetic experience. The artist or craftsperson works directly with the material and is guided in part by its intrinsic nature. Debbie Templeton-Page immerses herself in the process feeling at one with the material. She is of Australian Aboriginal descent and like many indigenous people feels a connection to place and time that is difficult to explain other than through art. Artists that work with clay and stone often talk about an embodied feeling – a haptic sense where the mind and body work together to create the work. In creating a work in this way the viewer or owner of the finished work can also find this connection through touch and observation. It is a mysterious process whereby the work is never completely finished because at each stage, whether the material is inert in the ground, in the hand of the maker or in the possession of an art lover, each brings their understanding and experience to the work. Debbie says that once introduced to sculpture and carving work from rock she felt driven to work almost obsessively. Like many sculptors, Debbie enjoys the blue stone, New Zealand basalt on which Timaru her home sits. This black-grey rock with seams of bubbles formed in the heat of volcanic activity creates the basis of much of her current work. She is however a versatile artist and also creates sculptures from marble and bronze. Her subject matter – guardian figures and multi-headed women – shows a complexity of thought both philosophical and spiritual. This

interesting work, where two heads or more appear in one sculpture, explains the multifaceted nature of life. They demonstrate how as individuals we can have a face we show the world, another we show our loved ones, and maybe even another that only we know. Her guardian figures feel like a link to our past, maybe ancestors or those that walk with us. Grouped in threes or more they provide a presence wherever they are placed, reminding us of the interconnections we have with others and with nature. Debbie was looking for the meaning of life through reading, travel and meditation but in her vocation as a sculptor she may have found that meaning. Debbie has energy and a zest for life and an enthusiasm that can be described as eccentric or, as her daughter describes her, “quirky”. She works in her York St Gallery in Timaru, and has won several awards and commissions. Each year at Art in a Garden, Hawarden, Debbie exhibits a diverse range of sculpture and is always popular with buyers. When you see her work next, remember that there is more to the object than how it appears. At the hands of the artist you are being given a link with nature and the world around you. Good sculpture endures.

Fish and chips wrapped in bedsheets, hoisted to an upper level of the old Rangi Ruru boarding house, this is just one of the stories told by the Gibson Girls, the original students taught by the Gibson Sisters who founded Rangi Ruru Girl’s School in 1889. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea together with the Gibson Girls on November 24th and they spent time with some of our younger students. The New Zealand Mounted Games Under 17 team won the world championships in Auckland on November 26th and in that team was a Rangi Ruru student, Leah Zydenbos. Leah did us all proud and has worked exceptionally hard to achieve what she has.

DEBBIE TEMPLETON-PAGE In the October edition of Style, photographs of work by Debbie Templeton-Page were incorrectly attributed to Doug Neil. Both work with the NZ basalt or blue stone but their artworks are quite different. We apologise to Debbie and Doug and have included a photograph (below) of Doug’s work to make this clear.

High School Musical (Junior) performed with Christ’s College ran from 22-25 November in our Merivale Lane Theatre and this year, was the hottest ticket in town. Never before has our school show sold out so fast. Not just once, but the extra show and then the extra extra show. That’s almost 900 tickets snapped up. All of the actors performed very professionally, putting in so much hard work. Thank you to our exceptional staff and of course our parents without whom we could not achieve what we do. Another fantastic turn out from our Rangi Community for our annual Year 7 and 8 Market Day on November 27th with blue sky, sun and bartering everywhere. It’s part of the girls’ studies, to plan a business project which culminates in the running of a market stall at school. Sharing their generosity of spirit the girls each donated funds to their chosen charity. By the time you read this, we will have held our Clan Christmas Services when we reflect on our achievements and experiences, celebrating the end of another year. The number of scholarships, and academic and personal achievements this year has been outstanding. The Rangi Ruru Old Girls Association School Ball will be held on Thursday 7th December at Wigram Airforce Musuem. This is a significant event for our senior girls as they leave Rangi Ruru and officially become Old Girls, and continue the long-lasting legacy of the Gibson Sisters. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and summer break, and here’s to an exciting and happy 2018.

Engage your stomach muscles while you sit up straight; tense your bicep while you vacuum; think about your glutes when you crouch. By being aware of your muscles, and tensing them while you go about

MASTERING ISOMETRICS Palms Together: Push your hands together as hard as you can, and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat. Core Work: Tighten your stomach muscles, while holding your feet about 10cm off the ground. Increase the resistance by using your hands to push down on your knees, while maintaining the height of your feet off the floor. Hold for 30 seconds, and repeat. Thigh Time: While standing, lift one leg until your thigh is perpendicular to the ground. Use one or both hands to push down on the raised leg, at the same time as you continue to lift it upward to maintain its level. Hold for 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat. Bye-bye Butt: Lie on the ground with your knees bent and arms at your sides. Lift your hips off the ground by pressing down on your palms and feet. Clench your glutes. Focus on pushing your weight through to your heels. Hold for 30 seconds. Don’t let your hips sink!

It’s said no one celebrates new year like the Russians, so triple-layer your thermals and embrace the winter wonderland that is St Petersburg. Its fabulous palaces, boulevards and bridges are at their most dazzling covered in snow and illuminated in white lights. Join the crowds at the Hermitage Museum to await the huge fireworks show over the Neva River – and be prepared to sip your “Soviet champagne” well into the wee hours (we’re talking 3am fireworks). The President’s address, live music, and hundreds of paper lanterns launching into the sky fill the wait. Reykjavik

WHITE HOT DESTINATIONS Another city that turns white to celebrate Réveillon is Rio de Janiero. It’s mandatory to don white clothing as it symbolises good luck for the next year, and head to a luxury nightspot or the waterfront to party. My best new year ever (and there’s been some good ones – Sydney 2000, Hogmanay in Edinburgh) was spent on the white sands of Copacabana. The beach is so long and so wide, two million people pack in to samba till dawn to the beats from huge stages featuring some mega stars. Despite the crowd and the caiproska and beer stalls right on the beach, the atmosphere is chilled and joyous. Brazilians just want to have fun. We made friends with locals who introduced us to the tradition of offering gladiolis to Yemanja, the goddess of the sea, and jumping the waves seven times for luck. There’s the obligatory fireworks, too, fired from a flotilla of cruise ships anchored in Guanabara Bay. Ivory tsungas optional. Another South American hotspot that attracts millions to its celebration is across the Andes in Chile. The gorgeous port city of Valparaiso is known for its colourful buildings and murallined alleys so it’s apt the locals wear yellow underwear to bring good luck in the coming year. That and eating a dozen grapes at midnight and putting a $1000 peso note in their shoe! Its fireworks display is the biggest in Latin America, launching from multiple points along the 8km coastline to Vina del Mar. And the Chileans are equally good as their neighbours at partying until dawn. Across the hemisphere, Cape Town brings in the new year with the four-day minstrel carnival called Kaapse Klopse when thousands of fabulously dressed Cape Minstrels take over the streets of the Mother City. Big brass bands lead raucous road marches called Nagtroepe on the last two days of the year and the historic Second New Year Street Parade, also known as Tweede Nuwejaar, on 2 January. The processions date back to the mid-nineteenth century when slaves were given one day off in the year (2 January). To celebrate, groups would dress up as minstrels, waving parasols, strumming banjos and making merry with music, dance and a parade from the District Six area through to the city centre. Many of the songs still sung today date back to the 1800s.

New Orleans doesn’t just party at Mardi Gras. The southern city rivals New York for new year revelry. It has one of the US’s best fireworks displays, over the Mississippi River, as well as the ‘Fleur de Lis drop’ from the roof of the Jax Brewery at Jackson Square, reminiscent of the ‘Times Square Ball drop’.

Motoring writer Ross Kiddie says the new Ford Escape is a cross between a sports utility vehicle and a sports car.

scape has been a popular brand for Ford New Zealand. That being the case, I was surprised when the name of the sport utility vehicle was dropped in favour of Kuga. The latter also sold well, but now Ford has reverted back to Escape, the latest name change also coinciding with a new release. Those who do relate to the old Escape will be aware of its pedigree, it was a model shared similarly with Mazda (Tribute) in New Zealand and had its origins in Taiwan. The new Escape is totally different. It is now sourced from Europe, Spain to be exact, and unlike its V6 predecessor it has only four cylinders, but there are many varying engine types – diesel and petrol and in 1.5-litre or 2-litre capacity. The range is extensive with seven models starting from $37,990, some offered in four-wheel-drive. The test car was Titanium-badged and sits in the line-up at $53,490, there is only one model with a higher ticket and that is the diesel powered version with the same specification ($54,990). The 2-litre petrol, all-wheel-drive variant is certainly a worthy choice, the Escape in this form is a cross between the traditional SUV and a sports car, that comment simply because of its engine output, it is rated at 178kW and 345Nm.

That’s mostly due to the turbocharging system fitted to the twin-camshaft, 16-valve unit, it offers significant boost at a low operating area. Peak power arrives at just 5500rpm while maximum torque is available all of the way from 2000rpm to 4500rpm. The significance of those figures is the punchy way the engine works. It is feisty and lively, yet it delivers with little audible sound. If you also factor in the way power is transferred through a silky smooth six-speed automatic gearbox, the driveline is structured for quick momentum with a responsive nature. The Escape in this form will accelerate from a standstill in 8sec and will complete an overtaking time of 4.9sec to make 120km/h from 80km/h. My comments about sports car performance aren’t an exaggeration. Ford is quite proud of its Ecoboost range of engines, they have been developed not so much for the performance I’ve just commented on, but they also stand out for their economy. As it turned out I drove the new Escape at city speeds for a fair chunk of my evaluation and that wasn’t kind to the economy, the fuel usage readout listing around 10.6-litres per 100km (27mpg) when I took the car back to the dealership. That’s quite distant to Ford’s combined average cycle claim of 8.6l/100km (33mpg), but that’s put into perspective when you take into account the 6.2l/100km (46mpg) sitting instantaneously at a steady 100km/h, the engine turning over at just 1750rpm. mechanism. Turn-in is direct and accuracy within the handling process is positive. I particularly like the way the Escape handles, and that doesn’t surprise me. I’m a big European Ford fan, and the way the designers engineer balance and handling ability into the chassis of all their varying model styles is a credit. The Escape is also fitted with state-of-theart gear for comfort, convenience and safety. Some of the major items include full leather trim with heated front seats, satellite navigation, full length electric sunroof, voice recognition communication and infotainment, and radar cruise control. Of course, it is also five-star safety rated.

I was a little ambivalent when I picked up the Escape, I knew that its engine wouldn’t live up to the thrill of the old Volvo-derived, 2.5-litre, turbo five-cylinder unit found in some variants of the old Kuga, still one of my favourite engines. That being the case, the Escape’s 2-litre engine had to really work hard to win me over and I should have known it wouldn’t disappoint. Its honesty, power outputs and generally quiet operating manner make it a real honey. Just as well, then, that the rest of the vehicle has the quality to support it; the entire package is quite outstanding. It will certainly lure Escape buyers of old, and those who are contemplating trading up from Kuga.

here was an air of excitement suffusing the foyer at Hoyts Riccarton when Discover Travel hosted a preview party for the premier of Murder On The Orient Express. The anticipation of being transported for an hour or so to exotic locations, sent a thrill through the mingling invitees. Within the depths of the darkened movie house, Agatha Christieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tale of intrigue and dastardly doings was beginning to play and captivate the audience who, having seen the wonderful locations depicted, may be inspired to travel and discover such places for themselves. he southern hemisphere’s ultra violet blazed blisteringly down on Addington, seeking out any patch of unshaded fair skin on which to leave a red reminder of Cup Day. The noise and bustle sent thrills and fingers of excitement along nerves as the day unfolded, the elegance of fashion and the drama of on track chariot battles were eagerly anticipated. At the other end of the week of turf-centred entertainment, a gently weathered morning unfolded at Riccarton Park where shaded picnics reeked of understated opulence. Locally produced movie, The Stolen was being premiered and to the cheers of onlookers, cast members walked the crimson path to the Hollywood Theatre. Cameras clicked and flashguns popped as the festive evening got underway, recalling the golden age of the silver screen when the kings and queens of the celluloid were mobbed and adored for their art.
